Let There be Light, Shards and Mirrors...
Being surrounded by crystals during my photo shoot for Sagent Pharmaceuticals, I felt like I was standing in an opening scene from Superman - the movie. Towers of crystals also surrounded Marlon Brando, when he sent the baby Kal-El (Superboy) to Earth. My sole lighting source for these photos was a variable focusing spotlight, which I shined through shards of (self-broken) window glass, prisms and quartz crystals. The careful blending of these items bent and refracted the light beautifully. Silver cards and mirrors were used to reflect my light back towards the products and their shadows. Gobo cards were also used to create additional hard and soft shadows in front and behind the products. We had multiple images to select from, because the look and feel would change with just the slightest turn of a glass shard or mirror. The racking of focus in either direction created vastly different dimensions as well.
It s terrific to be given an open-ended assignment. Kerry LaCoste, creative director, wished to show the Sagent products using selective focus, in a dramatically designed fashion. Our hi-res files worked out perfectly for the 8-foot panels, which were displayed at a very successful trade show. Thank you to Kerry LaCoste and all of the fine folks at Sagent Pharmaceuticals for such a virtually restriction-free assignment.
