"Blood...What Blood?"

"Whoa, what kind of shot did that lady take?"
I think I'm the one who took the pretty cool shot...with a little help
from my friends.

We were to shoot photography for a  promo poster for the Windy City Rollers, a Chicago Roller Derby league. The idea for the poster was the brainchild of art director, Adam VonOhlen and writer, Jeremy Simmons, of Two x Four Communications . The Roller Derby Queen is Lucy Furr, captain of the WCR team, The Double Crossers.  The expert make-up application that brings the image to its unsettling edge is the work of Jeffrey Lyle Segal, a creative and insightful artist, who I've worked with many times.
And just for the record, the tattoo is real.

Lucy understood the combination of self assuredness and nerve required to make the Blood. The New Pink idea a reality. It’s that “ is that all you’ve got” look. Painstakingly, we styled her gear; the helmet, skates, mouthpiece and especially the blood!  It didn’t matter how much blood and gore we asked for, Jeff made it happen while keeping Lucy looking good!  The small team of us creatives made themselves into one person...all fitting onto the same single page.

Confusion did set in at the point of culling through all the wonderful shots. Although there were many, both Adam and I actually knew the clear winner at the moment of its capture. a shot that combined blood thirst and beauty, a shot that roars, “was that your best shot?”

At the end of the day, Don Levey Makes People Happy again:  Adam, Jeremy, everyone at Two x Four, Jeff, and all the people at Windy City Rollers.  Even though Lucy has taken a lot of shots on the track, both real and photo, this one with the different make-up is now her new favorite.

Blood...What Blood?!?
